The  seventh conference of the series “The Appetizer” of the 2011-12 course will be held on Monday, November 28st . Maki Kawaguchi will present the conference “Defensive Urbanism: Case Study Wall Street”. The event will take place at 2 pm in classroom 142 of the Segovia Campus.

The event is organized by IE School of Architecture. “The Appetizer” are series that run for a second year and aim to bring students closer to the key forces that shape contemporary architecture. Recognized professionals and academics in the discipline will address specific issues that are near or tangent to the field of architecture. They will be using small presentations that are less formal and rigid than a normal conference. The lecture series is organized by the Associate Dean of External Relations at IE School of Architecture and executive director of the Pritzker Awards, Martha Thorne, and IE School of Architecture & Design academics, Julian Garcia and Anna Mestre.

Located adjacent to the World Trade Centre site and an icon of US economic power, after 9/11, the New York Stock Exchange was identified as a likely target for terrorism. Immediate steps were taken to secure the area. This was initially accomplished through the rapid installation of armed security personnel, along with a vast array of jersey barriers, barricades, checkpoints and parked trucks.

The Financial District Security and Streetscape project looked at security devices as an amenity rather than a burden. By utilizing security programming to build public amenities that enhance the public space around one of New York’s most iconic building, this project balances the issues and contradictions of enabling vibrant streetscape while installing cutting-edge security in the densest urban condition of New York.
