  • The course is very different to the traditional format, with four different specializations to equip the student to be a corporate lawyer, transnational lawyer, environmental lawyer or expert in EU law.
  • Students can also study a dual Bachelor of Laws and Business Administration Degree
  • Clifford Chance, PwC and Latham & Watkins will offer scholarships covering 75% of enrolment fees

IE University has presented its new Bachelor of Laws, an innovative degree course whereby students can choose one of four different specializations to become a corporate lawyer, environmental lawyer, transnational lawyer or expert in EU law. The official presentation of the Bachelor program took place during a round table on Training Lawyers of the Future, where participants included Antonio Hernández Gil, Dean of the Madrid Bar Association, Antonio Morales, Partner of Latham & Watkins, Madrid, Ignacio Ojanguren, managing partner of Clifford Chance Madrid, and Santiago Barrenechea, managing partner of PwC Tax & Legal Services. The round table was moderated by José María de Areilza, Dean of IE Law School, and Soledad Atienza, Director of IE University’s Bachelor of Laws.

The new Bachelor of Laws will have both English and Spanish versions, and will be launched in September of this year at IE’s Madrid and Segovia campuses. The  program is very different to the traditional format offered by most universities in that  students can choose from 4 specializations, namely that of corporate lawyer, which equips students to work in companies or law firms with an international corporate focus, transnational lawyer, for those students who want to practice as lawyers in Spain and in the UK, environmental lawyer, to provide counsel in the field of the environment, and expert in EU law, for students who seek to specialize in this field. Moreover, students can study a dual degree in law and business administration, gleaning the benefits of the extensive experience of IE Law School and IE Business School in both fields.

The Bachelor of Laws enjoys the support of companies that include Clifford Chance, PwC, and Latham & Watkins, who will be funding some of the future lawyers at IE University with the Latham & Watkins Scholarship for Entrepreurial Lawyering, the Clifford Chance scholarship for Diversity, and the PwC scholarship for Global Lawyering, each of which cover 75% of enrolment fees.

Soledad Atienza, Director of IE University’s Bachelor of Laws explained how the course is designed to respond to the fast-changing needs of the law sector.  “The key differentiating factor of the program is its active methodology and its lawyering content. Students are brought into close contact with professional realities through practical case studies, workshops and role play, while the international slant of the degree program equips them to practice law in both the UK and Spain, all this coupled with internships in renowned Spanish and international law firms. We want our students to think and work like lawyers from day one.”

The Bachelor of Laws also benefits from agreements between IE Law School and institutions that include Hong Kong University, King’s College , Northwestern, William & Mary, Georgetown, NUS Singapore, Getulio Vargas (Sao Paolo), Bucerius (Hamburg), Tilburg (Holland) or Sciences Po (Paris).

IE University will be launching a Bachelor of Laws Degree (LLB) for the 2011-2012 academic year following the official accreditation of the program by Spain’s University Commission. The four-year degree program will be run under the aegis of IE Law School, and will have a markedly global slant in line with similar programs at other prestigious international universities, such as Northwestern University (Chicago), Beijing University School of Transnational Law, or King’s College of London.

Students will benefit from the numerous agreements which IE Law School, one of the most recognized institutions of its kind, enjoys with other leading international law schools around the world. Graduates will be equipped to exercise the legal profession in Spain, UK, and the US, and the program curriculum will combine corporate law with the study of business administration and humanities. The IE Bachelor of Laws will also place a special emphasis on professional skills, with a clear focus on international lawyering.

The new degree program will be available in Spanish and English. It will be taught at IE’s Segovia campus, and students will also be able to enjoy the advantages of agreements between IE  Law School, headed by Dean José María de Areilza, and leading law firms in Spain and worldwide.

The Rector of IE University, Juan Luis Martínez, stated that “this new Law Degree further enhances IE University’s broad portfolio of degree programs, and is aligned with all IE programs in that it is geared to meet market needs and ensure the employability of its graduates”.

During the four-year program students will have access to IE Law School’s “Law Unplugged” seminar, which will permit them to simulate the practical application of Law in parallel to their legal training. Moreover students will have the opportunity to take part in an exchange program with other leading international law schools.

“IE Law School has been teaching law from an international perspective for some thirty five years,” says Soledad Atienza, Director of IE University’s Bachelor in Laws.  “Our programs are based on a highly active approach and are designed to meet the needs of business. The key differentiating factors of our law degree lies in its flexibility due to online options and its large range of electives, and its clear focus on international practice.”

Leading private US University Brown and IE University are set to run an innovative summer program in Segovia for US pre-university students, aimed at introducing them to the world of business, humanities, international relations, communication and law, while learning Spanish. The course forms part of a collaboration agreement between the two institutions which includes a series of joint programs, student exchanges, and research projects.

Course participants will be pre-university students selected by Brown University to undergo an intensive 3-week program designed to bring them their first taste of university life. Successful candidates will stand out for outstanding talent across different academic disciplines, despite their young age. Students will be aged between 15 and 17, and will receive classes in modern Spanish and EU history, cultural diversity, economy and art history in the mornings, led by IE University, together with a daily Spanish class. The afternoons will comprise three seminars focused on law and capital punishment, literature and censorship, and media arts, led by Brown University professors Corey Brettschneider, Allison Brettschneider and Ed Osborn, respectively.

“The thing that is so interesting about this program is that students learn by working in a relaxed and pleasant environment, using the same methodology that they will find at university” explained Miguel Larrañaga, Vice Rector for Institutional Relations at IE University and one of the professors that will be taking part in the project. Other IE professors include José María de Areilza, Dean of IE Law School and Director of the Jean Monnet-IE Chair, and Begoña González Cuesta, Director of the Degree in Communication. During their time in Spain the students will also get to visit Madrid, Cordoba, Seville and Barcelona, with a view to getting a feel for Spanish and European culture. Programmed activities include visits to museums like the Esteban Vicente museum, the Prado, and the Reina Sofia.

Brown University’s program director, Yolanda Castillo Appollonio, feels that “the most interesting aspect is that participants will be tackling a broad and highly diverse range of subjects that will help them to develop a better idea of the direction they want their university studies to take”, while Elena Lledó, academic coordinator of the Brown University study program, added that “These are forward-looking students who view the future from a highly professional perspective, guided by experienced and competent professors”.
