We would like to inform you that, as of today Thursday 22nd of September, we have 50 tickets available for the exclusive use of IE University students to attend the following event from the Hay Festival:   a  conversation between Juan Ignacio Gallardo, Co-Director for MARCA, David Bach, Professor of Strategic Management at IE Business School and Spanish national trainer Vicente del Bosque.   The roundtable will take place this coming Saturday the 24th of September at 21:30 in the old church of San Juan de los Caballeros.

Vicente del Bosque will share his thoughts on the keys of leadership and team play that made ‘la Roja’ a world-wide sports symbol and will finish by giving one of his favorite lectures to those in attendance.   “Vicente del Bosque is the Steve Jobs of football, the leader and brains of the most innovative team and, as a result, the most successful in the world.   There’s much we can learn from him regarding sports, handling business, and leadership in general.”  commented David Bach,  Professor of IE Business School.

SÁBADO 17 DE SEPTIEMBRE, 11,30 HORAS, AULA MAGNA  

El acto contará con presencia del Rector Salvador Carmona y del Consejero de Educación de la Junta de Castilla y León, Juan José Mateos. 

El próximo sábado 17 de septiembre el Aula Magna de IE University acogerá, a partir de las 11,30 horas,  el acto de apertura del curso académico 2011/2012, que contará con la presencia del Rector Salvador Carmona y del Consejero de Educación de la Junta de Castilla y León, Juan José Mateos. La lección inaugural correrá a cargo de José M. de Areilza, decano de IE Law School y titular de la Cátedra Jean Monnet-IE. 

El profesor José M. de Areilza (en la foto) analizará el difícil momento presente de la Unión Europea y las perspectivas de futuro; trasladará a los estudiantes las claves para entender la situación y expondrá los retos políticos y económicos a los que tendrán que enfrentarse los estados miembros, como la inestabilidad actual, el papel de la moneda única y la necesidad de dar un paso más en la cohesión entre socios europeos. 

IE University inicia el curso académico con la novedad de la puesta en marcha de los estudios de Derecho en el campus de Segovia y con el impulso de la internacionalización de su alumnado. El curso 2011/2012 arranca con doscientos alumnos nuevos provenientes de cincuenta países. En el campus de Segovia, los alumnos internacionales representan más del 60 por ciento. En total, el curso cuenta con 75 nacionalidades representadas en el campus. 

Lección inaugural: José M. de Areilza 

Doctor en Derecho por la Universidad de Harvard, el profesor José M. de Areilza fue asesor en asuntos europeos y norteamericanos en el Gabinete del Presidente del Gobierno entre 1996-2000, periodo trascendental en la economía europea con el nacimiento del Euro.  También ha sido asesor del representante del gobierno español en la Convención Europea de 2002 que preparó el Tratado Constitucional. 

Es abogado del New York Bar y estudió cinco años en Harvard Law School, donde es uno de los pocos europeos que obtuvo su Master y su Doctorado en Derecho. En 2007 la Comisión Europea le nombró titular de la Cátedra Jean Monnet en IE. Ha escrito más de 30 artículos académicos sobre Instituciones y toma de decisiones en la Unión Europea y sobre la relación de la Unión con sus Estados miembros. Contribuye con frecuencia a las páginas de opinión de ABC, El Pais y El Correo y es el Editor y fundador del weblog de debate europeo BlogEuropa.eu.

This year Hay Festival will feature great speakers such as  Eduardo Mendoza, Rüdiger Safranski, Lord Desai, Vicente del Bosque, Bjärke Ingels, Sharmila Tagore, Arturo Perez Reverte, David Mitchell, Janne Teller, Upamanyu Chatterjee , Iñaki Gabilondo and Juan Luis Cebrián.

The Festival of ideas and creativity will once again provoke an open and pluralistic reflection on the transformation of social and economic models, leadership, communication, the freedom of expression in the digital age, bullfighting as a cultural phenomenon, the role of women in Arab revolutions and sustainable architecture, among others.

IE UNIVERSITY AT HAY FESTIVAL SEGOVIA 2011             

The first part of Hay Festival will take place on Saturday 17th September at the Aula Magna of IE University – the former convent of Santa Cruz la Real. During a discussion called “Two free voices” the journalist Javier Moreno, Director of  El Pais will talk with the German philosopher and influential thinker Rudiger Safransk. This event will be hosted by the President of IE University, Santiago Iñiguez.

Hay Festival and IE University want to show the public the values of society and sport with the Spanish football team as an example of these. There will be a conversation between Oscar Campillo, Director of MARCA , David Bach, Professor of Strategy and Economic Environment at IE Business School and the Spanish National football coach Vicente del Bosque. During the talk Vicente del Bosque will share the share the secret of leadership and teamwork that made the Reds a world leader and. He will also present the audience one of his favorite readings.  “Vicente del Bosque is the Steve Jobs of football, the most innovative team leader hence the most successful in the world. There is much we can learn from him, such as sports, business and leadership in general,” says David Bach, Professor at IE Business School.

The Executive Director of the Pritzker Awards and Associate Dean of External Relations of IE School of Architecture at IE University Martha Thorne will be talking with Bjärke Ingels – one of the most recognized architects worldwide. Bjärke Ingels is the founder of Studio BIG and is considered as one of today´s most innovative architects as he has managed to combine great sustainability works. In February 2011 was published the Spanish version of “Yes Is More,” a manifesto of architectural evolution that has gained broad international acceptance.

It is also important to mention the literary journalism workshop of ABC and IE University, which will be broadcast via Internet streaming, by the Medialab of IE School of Communication. The workshop will be conducted and presented by Jesus Calero, head of Culture and ABC journalist and professor at the IE University Pedro Cifuentes and autors Eduardo Mendoza and Patricio Pron will also take part of the event. Su tesis obtuvo la calificación de Sobresaliente cum laude por unanimidad 

Javier Macías, profesor del grado de Arquitectura, obtuvo el pasado 20 de julio el grado de doctor por IE University con la calificación de Sobresaliente cum laude por unanimidad tras la defensa de su tesis doctoral titulada “Fractal: modelo de representación posmoderna en la novela Estrella distante de Roberto Bolaño”. La Tesis del nuevo doctor estuvo dirigida por la profesora de Comunicación de IE, Begoña González Cuesta.

El tribunal estuvo integrado por los doctores Juan Luis Martínez Sánchez (IE University, Presidente), Arantza de Areilza Churruca (IE School of Humanities, vocal), Jacobo Aguirre Araujo (CSIC-INTA, vocal), José Sánchez del Río Sáez (CSIC-IEM, vocal) y José Luis Luque Blanco (IE University, Secretario).

El trabajo del profesor Macías “trata de descubrir en la estructura profunda de la novela Estrella distante de Roberto Bolaño su relación con los modelos fractales, atendiendo a los distintos aspectos que lo definen como son patrón generador, escala, recursividad, ramificación, autosemejanza, atractor, indeterminismo y fragmentación”. 

Este trabajo aprovecha la nueva epistemología que trata de enfocar trabajos de investigación desde la doble perspectiva de la ciencia y las humanidades. El proceso relacional parte de la metodología de análisis literario conocida como “Tematismo Estructural” basada en los trabajos del profesor Javier del Prado Biezma, y se ciñe al contenido textual de la novela en sus instancias narrativas para luego contrastarlo con la definición de las distintas características ya mencionadas que implica la definición de fractal. 

“La vinculación de la obra con dicho modelo natural, y no exclusivamente matemático, responde a la convicción de que éste se ha afianzado como símbolo del momento histórico-cultural en el que la obra fue creada, enmarcado éste dentro de la dialéctica entre la antigua modernidad y el posmodernismo”, afirma el nuevo doctor.

Salvador Carmona appointed Rector of IE University

The new rector enjoys international recognition as an academic and as a manager of educational organizations

The appointment further strengthens the international strategy and academic focus of the University as a generator of knowledge

The appointment will be effective as of September 1 

The Board of Governors of IE University has today appointed Salvador Carmona as the institution’s new rector, a position he will assume on September 1. Carmona will take over from Juan Luis Martínez, the outgoing rector, who has accepted a proposal to work on institutional and strategic development initiatives in the city of Cordoba, his hometown. Juan Luis Martínez will maintain close links with IE as an associate professor on extended leave.     

As the new rector of IE University, Salvador Carmona’s key objectives will be to further consolidate the university’s position as a reference in the field of knowledge generation, strengthen its academic and institutional pillars as well as its international outreach, and develop the university’s role as a change agent.

“After the consolidation of an ambitious international project over the last four years, IE University has brought added impetus to the generation of top-tier academic knowledge with this appointment,” says Santiago Iñiguez, President of IE University. “Salvador Carmona’s international renown as a distinguished academic serves to further strengthen this core value of our university.” 

Born in the Spanish province of Granada, Carmona holds a doctorate and university degree in economic sciences from Seville University, and is internationally recognized in academia and the field of educational management. 

In the field of research, he serves as editor of the European Accounting Review, has been a member of the executive committee of the European Accounting Association, and President of the Academy of Accounting Historians. In addition to being a member of the editorial boards of fifteen prestigious international journals, he is the author and co-author of an extensive number of articles, books and teaching materials.   

In the field of educational management, in addition to the positions he has held at IE he has served as the manager of Spain’s national R&D Plan, in the area of economy and business management, and has been the dean, as well as senior lecturer, of the Faculty of Social and Legal Sciences at Madrid’s Carlos III University.  

Salvador Carmona also has experience in business consulting, as well as serving as visiting professor at universities that include CEIBS (China), Arizona State University (US), and University of Gothenburg (Sweden). 

Salvador Carmona, who will continue to participate in international research projects, will combine his functions of rector of IE University with those of his current position as vice dean for faculty at IE Business School.
