Written on February 20, 2014 by Roberto Arribas in Uncategorized

2014-02-19 17.18.58-2Spanish-African basketball ex-player Anicet Lavodrama visited IE University campus in Segovia to participate as a speaker in a workshop directed by journalist Miguel Ángel Paniagua. Lavodrama, a retired Central African pivot, played in the ACB in the 80’s and 90’s in teams such as OAR Ferrol, CB Valladolid, and the Joventut of Badalona. He is currently, the agent of the pivot of the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Hispanic-Congolese Serge Ibaka

Lavodrama went through his trajectory with the IE students and remembered some of the milestones in his long sports career, and his work linked to the sports world. He explained to the Communications students some of the keys that made NBA the best basketball league in the world. In his speech in Segovia, the Sports Director of Tuenti Móvil Estudiantes team, Eduardo Pascual, and the Director of the Degree in Communication, Miguel Ángel Gabaldón, accompanied him.

“Media and Communications and Modern NBA” is the name of this workshop, directed by one of the most well known sports journalists – especially when talking basketball – in Spain, Miguel Ángel Paniagua. There, they analyze the communications strategies of the NBA since 1984, when David Stern took charge, until now. The communication students learn the different tools and strategies that Stern instituted on his thirty years of direction, coinciding with the celebrated Dream Team, the super-stars team that represented USA in the Basketball Olympic Games, a perfect example of sports marketing. The end of Stern reign came with a change in the traditional communication models, and the NBA is an example of how a sports league adapted to new media and tools so powerful as social networks.

Let’s all make a bridge. How do we build it?

Written on December 17, 2012 by Roberto Arribas in Architecture

Students of Architecture at IE University build a joint model to analyze how the forces involved in this type of structure work

Let’s all make a bridge. How do we build it? This is the challenge that was raised today by second and third year architecture students at IE University in the Segovia campus. Under the supervision of several teachers at the school, the undergraduates have made a joint study of the different types of bridges, in collaboration with Digital Studies, under the subjects of Structural Types I, Structural Types II and ‘Tipologías Estructurales II’.

The workshop “Fabricating the bridge_2012” has culminated in the construction of a model of a bridge, made through the use of laser cutting machines, which were tested by adding up to four kilograms of cargo in order to analyze the failure mode. The workshop aimed for students to understand how the forces are involved in the construction of various types of ‘hanging’ structures.

The students were accompanied by their teachers Anna Mestre, Adrian Sánchez, Javier Giménez and Anna Pla Catalá. The jury included the director for the Degree of Architecture, David Goodman, and the teachers Roberto Molinos and Carlota González.
