IE University and The Chronicle of Higher Education have announced that they will be joining forces to organize a conference on Reinventing Higher Education: The Role of the University in a Global Society, set to take place on October 18 of this year at IE’s Madrid campus. The event is in line with the markedly international approach of IE University, launched in 2008 by leading management educator IE Business School.

The conference will be structured around a series of panels comprised of some 25 thought leaders, university administrators, policy makers, entrepreneurs, academics, student representatives, and media experts, who will discuss the current status and future evolution of higher education (HE), and debate the direction that research, learning, governance and management of universities should now take.

Speakers this year include Lisa Anderson, President of The American University in El Cairo; Nigel Thrift, Vice Chancellor of Warwick University; Martha Mackenzie, President of the Oxford Student Union; Francis Vérillaud, Vice President of Sciences Po; Matthew Gutmann, Vice President of Brown University; and David Van Zandt , President of The New School (NY).

The full list of speakers is available at http://www.rhe.ie.edu/speakers.php

Topics for debate will include:

  • Ways in which universities can contribute to human and social development in the developing world
  • How to teach students to work in cross-cultural, international teams
  • How university research has to be reshaped to work on the world’s most difficult and important problems
  • The relevance of education for graduates’ careers – how to encourage interaction between global universities and global corporations.
  • The increased mobility of students, faculty and institutions, with the definition of international partnerships and cooperation, branch campuses, etc.
  • The new student profiles, versed in new technologies, entering the field with new skills and attitudes towards learning.

IIT College of Architecture (Chicago) and IE School of Architecture launch a Summer School in Madrid to examine the cross implications of density and sustainability in architecture.

The Illinois Institute of Technology College of Architecture, Chicago, and IE School of Architecture & Design, Madrid/Segovia, have joined forces to launch the IE/IIT Summer School, set to take place from July 8 to 15, 2011. The course, headed ATLAS ON DENSITY, will explore the cross implications of levels of density and sustainability from the sprawl of American suburbs to the extreme density of Asian cities.

The intensive 8-day studio-based design workshop will be held in Madrid and will provide enthusiastic architectural undergraduate and graduates worldwide with a stage for debating contemporary architectural and urban ideas, digital and analogue techniques, with an emphasis on inventive design and communication abilities. Using Madrid as a laboratory, participants will explore the architectural, urban, and environmental implications of density. Tutors from Chicago, Madrid, and Singapore, will use their own metropolitan backgrounds to enrich the potential evolution of Spain’s capital.

With Madrid serving as headquarters, case study subject, and site for field research, students will investigate specific urban sustainable challenges. The workshop will foster a debate about the future of cities based on the positive or negative consequences of density, embedding sustainability deep into the design process. Is there a level of density that fosters ecosystem regeneration and a respect for nature? The course will explore the way toward a new notion of density, one that oscillates between the quantitative and qualitative properties of architecture and the city.

This design and research-based architecture workshop, organized by both schools in collaboration with the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, will include a number of expert lectures. In line with IE’s education model, the course will also feature intensive courses on digital design tools and communication abilities, aimed at enhancing both individual and group work.
