From July 2nd to the 4th,  Fundación Joaquín Díaz celebrated in Urueña (Valladolid) the 3rd Symposium on Popular Literature, this year dedicated to the World upside-down.

The first lecture served as a framework for the symposium; it was pronounced  by Professor Juan José Prat Ferrer, from IE University. Dr Prat examined the diverse manifestations of chaos and cosmos in mythic and scientific thought and the world upside-down as one of the main manifestations of chaos in the collective imaginary, expressed in popular visual arts as well as in traditional rituals. Professor José Luis Alonso Ponga, from the University of Valladolid de la UVA, talked about inversion rituals in traditional culture. Some other presentations, such as the one given by the Segovian actress Ana Zamora on the Medieval Dance of Death in contemporary theater, or that by the Cuban Luis Enrique Valdés Duarte on parody as a subverted disorder stood out. Besides, the eLea Miguel Delibes Center hosted an exhibition titled The World Upside-down or madness in men, with  illustrations from the Martínez-Leis dating as far back as the16th Century. Its author, Jesús M. Martínez made an exhaustive analysis of images of the world upside down in 19^th century Spanish posters.

Entre los días 2 y 4 de julio La Fundación Joaquín Díaz celebró en Urueña el III Simposio de Literatura Popular, este año dedicado a la temática en torno al Mundo al Revés.

La primera ponencia, que sirvió de marco de reflexión para el simposio corrió a cargo del profesor Juan José Prat Ferrer, de IE University, sobre la necesidad del caos, en la que examinaba las diversas manifestaciones de binomio caos-cosmos en el pensamiento mítico y en el científico así como el mundo al revés como una de las principales manifestaciones del caos en el imaginario colectivo, expresado tanto en la imaginería popular como en ritos y celebraciones. El profesor José Luis Alonso Ponga, de la UVA, habló sobre los ritos de inversión en la cultura tradicional. Otras conferencias que sobresalieron fueron las de la actriz segoviana Ana Zamora sobre la Danza de la Muerte medieval en el teatro contemporáneo o la del cubano Luis Enrique Valdés Duarte sobre la parodia como desorden subvertido. Además de las conferencias, el centro eLea Miguel Delibes alojó una magnífica exposición titulada El mundo al revés o la locura de los hombres, con estampas de la colección Martínes-Leis de entre los siglos XVI y XX. El autor de esta exposición, Jesús M. Martínez realizó en su ponencia  un exhaustivo estudio de las imágenes del mundo al revés en los pliegos de aleluyas españoles del siglo XIX.

IE University acoge hoy el taller de periodismo literario de ABC con la participación de los escritores Eduardo Mendoza y Patricio Pron. Esta actividad se enmarca del programa de Hay Festival Segovia, la gran cita de las artes y las letras que hasta el 25 de septiembre reúne a más de un centenar de autores y artistas de todo el mundo en más de setenta eventos.

La conversación, que aborda las íntimas relaciones entre periodismo y literatura, está siendo conducida por Jesús Calero, jefe de Cultura de ABC y por el periodista y profesor de IE University Pedro Cifuentes.

Danish architect Bjarke Ingels, keynote speaker at the Hay Festival Segovia 2011, will be talking to Martha Thorne, from IE School of Architecture

Hay Festival, IE University, American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) and the Danish Embassy have presented the architecture and design content of the upcoming edition of the festival in Spain, in the Chapter Room of IE University’s Segovia campus. From September 17 to 25 Hay Festival Segovia 2011 will serve as a hub for the discussion of literature and ideas, bringing together authors and artists from the five continents. 

“Together we are stronger,” says Maria Sheila Cremaschi, Director of Hay Festival Segovia. “In these difficult times putting together all these ideas centered around design and architecture, with the support of prestigious institutions who have brought innovation and youth to the festival, has been a source of great satisfaction.” 

This year’s guest of honor is Danish architect Bjarke Ingels, founder of the BIG studio, and considered to be one of the most innovative architects of the moment due to his ability to combine magnificent buildings with sustainability. In February of this year he brought out the Spanish version of “Yes is More”, an archicomic about architechtonic evolution, which has been extremely well received worldwide. Ingels will be talking to Martha Thorne, Executive Director of the Pritzker Prizes and Associate Dean of External Relations at IE School of Architecture at IE University. Ingels was recently selected as one of the 100 most creative professionals in business by New York magazine “Fast Company”. 

“Bjarke Ingels enjoys great international renown and represents a new generation of architects who are committed to the environment,” says Martha Thorne. 

AHEC at Hay Festival:  

David Venables, Director for Europe of the American Hardwood Export Council, announced that this year the exhibition organized by AHEC jointly with Escuela de Arte y Superior de Diseño de Segovia at Casa de los Picos will feature “The American Tulipwood Bar”, designed by Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto for the “Hand Made” exhibition held in Milan, organized by the world famous Wallpaper magazine. The exhibit will be inaugurated by Venables and Richard Cook, editor at Wallpaper. 

AHEC also announced the agreement signed this Wednesday with IE School of Architecture and Hay Festival for the joint organization of a series of activities that will culminate in an exhibition, in the 2012 edition of the festival, of projects that reach the finals of a competition that AHEC and the School of Architecture are currently organizing among their students. 

“We feel it is important to inspire students of architecture and future professionals in the field to use wood for sustainable design solutions. This is why we intend to forge even closer links with IE School of Architecture,” said Venables. “Moreover, we are delighted that this activity is connected with the wonderful Hay Festival.”

Hay Festival, IE University, American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC), la Embajada de Dinamarca y la Escuela de Arte y Superior de Diseño de Segovia dieron a conocer hoy en la Sala Capitular del Campus de IE University en Segovia las actividades en torno a la arquitectura y el diseño de la próxima edición del festival, el encuentro internacional de literatura e ideas que reunirá del 17 al 25 de septiembre de 2011 en Segovia a autores y artistas de los cinco continentes.

“La unión hace la fuerza”. Así lo subrayó Maria Sheila Cremaschi, Directora de Hay Festival Segovia, que subrayó que “en esta época de dificultades estoy particularmente satisfecha por haber creado esta unión de ideas en torno al diseño y la arquitectura respaldadas por unas instituciones de prestigio que aportan innovación y juventud al festival”. 

Este año el invitado estrella será el arquitecto danés Bjarke Ingels, fundador del Estudio BIG, considerado uno de los arquitectos más innovadores del momento debido a que ha sabido conjugar las grandes obras con la sostenibilidad. En febrero de 2011 publicó la versión española de “Yes is More”, un arquicómic sobre la evolución arquitectónica, que ha obtenido una gran acogida internacional. Ingels conversará con Martha Thorne, Directora Ejecutiva de los Premios Pritzker y Decana Asociada de Relaciones Externas de IE School of Architecture – IE University. Ingels ha sido elegido recientemente entre los cien profesionales más creativos en business por la revista neoyorkina “Fast Company”. “Bjarke Ingels goza de una gran reputación internacional y representa una nueva generación de arquitectos comprometidos con el entorno”, señaló Martha Thorne.

También se presentó un taller de arquitectura que será impartido por profesores de IE School of Architecture y una clase magistral del diseñador gráfico Emilio Gil, pionero del diseño en España y Fundador de TAU Diseño.
