  • The course is very different to the traditional format, with four different specializations to equip the student to be a corporate lawyer, transnational lawyer, environmental lawyer or expert in EU law.
  • Students can also study a dual Bachelor of Laws and Business Administration Degree
  • Clifford Chance, PwC and Latham & Watkins will offer scholarships covering 75% of enrolment fees

IE University has presented its new Bachelor of Laws, an innovative degree course whereby students can choose one of four different specializations to become a corporate lawyer, environmental lawyer, transnational lawyer or expert in EU law. The official presentation of the Bachelor program took place during a round table on Training Lawyers of the Future, where participants included Antonio Hernández Gil, Dean of the Madrid Bar Association, Antonio Morales, Partner of Latham & Watkins, Madrid, Ignacio Ojanguren, managing partner of Clifford Chance Madrid, and Santiago Barrenechea, managing partner of PwC Tax & Legal Services. The round table was moderated by José María de Areilza, Dean of IE Law School, and Soledad Atienza, Director of IE University’s Bachelor of Laws.

The new Bachelor of Laws will have both English and Spanish versions, and will be launched in September of this year at IE’s Madrid and Segovia campuses. The  program is very different to the traditional format offered by most universities in that  students can choose from 4 specializations, namely that of corporate lawyer, which equips students to work in companies or law firms with an international corporate focus, transnational lawyer, for those students who want to practice as lawyers in Spain and in the UK, environmental lawyer, to provide counsel in the field of the environment, and expert in EU law, for students who seek to specialize in this field. Moreover, students can study a dual degree in law and business administration, gleaning the benefits of the extensive experience of IE Law School and IE Business School in both fields.

The Bachelor of Laws enjoys the support of companies that include Clifford Chance, PwC, and Latham & Watkins, who will be funding some of the future lawyers at IE University with the Latham & Watkins Scholarship for Entrepreurial Lawyering, the Clifford Chance scholarship for Diversity, and the PwC scholarship for Global Lawyering, each of which cover 75% of enrolment fees.

Soledad Atienza, Director of IE University’s Bachelor of Laws explained how the course is designed to respond to the fast-changing needs of the law sector.  “The key differentiating factor of the program is its active methodology and its lawyering content. Students are brought into close contact with professional realities through practical case studies, workshops and role play, while the international slant of the degree program equips them to practice law in both the UK and Spain, all this coupled with internships in renowned Spanish and international law firms. We want our students to think and work like lawyers from day one.”

The Bachelor of Laws also benefits from agreements between IE Law School and institutions that include Hong Kong University, King’s College , Northwestern, William & Mary, Georgetown, NUS Singapore, Getulio Vargas (Sao Paolo), Bucerius (Hamburg), Tilburg (Holland) or Sciences Po (Paris).
