The profesor of  IE School of Architecture, Andy Bäcker is a finalist with a special mention in the 2nd Green ICT Application Challenge, organized by UIT and Telefónica, in support of “International year for Sustainable Energy for All”. 

The title of Bäcker´s project is “Sure”, it is a transparent, interactive, voluntary and fun certification system to help guide the way to become more sustainable. Applicable not only to companies but also to individuals (sustainable lifestyle), products, organizations, cities, and more, SURE! is a real-time scoring system to help spread local/international recognition for the efforts put in toward being sustainable. 

Andy Bäcker has specialized in the field of sustainable design since the first year of his BA  studies in Architecture.  He received his degree from the University of Manchester in 1995. After completing his Master´s in Architecture at the University of Michigan in 1999, he started working for well known environmentalist, William McDonough. In 2003 he became Special Assistant to William McDonough and Communications Director at McDonough Consulting. During this time he worked on projects for Ford, IBM, GAP, Herman Miller, etc. In 2005 he founded AEBdESIGN in Bilbao offering services in sustainable design & consulting. He worked on projects for Harvard University, Guggenheim Foundation, ArcelorMittal, University of Libya, BBVA, IDOM, Labein, etc. In 2009 he founded Sustainable Reference, a company focused on helping jumpstart the transition to a green economy worldwide. He´s a LEED Accredited Professional since 2002, a collaborating professor at ESEUNE Business School since 2008 and an Associate Professor at IE since 2009.

Red Herring announced its Top 100 award in recognition of the leading private companies from Europe, celebrating these startups’ innovations and technologies across their respective industries. 

Red Herring’s Top 100 Europe list has become a mark of distinction for identifying promising new companies and entrepreneurs. Red Herring editors were among the first to recognize that companies such as Facebook, Twitter, Google, Yahoo, Skype,, YouTube, and eBay would change the way we live and work. 

Among these companies, Professor Andy Bäcker’s company, Sustainable Reference, was included in the list. 

“Choosing the companies with the strongest potential was by no means a small feat,” said Alex Vieux, publisher and CEO of Red Herring. “After rigorous contemplation and discussion, we narrowed our list down from hundreds of candidates from across Europe to the Top 100 Winners. Sustainable Reference, empresa tecnológica impulsada por el profesor de IE University, Andy Bäcker, galardonada con un premio Red Herring Top 100 Europe 

Sustainable Reference, una nueva empresa liderada por el profesor de Arquitectura de IE University Andy Bäcker ha sido galardonada con un premio Red Herring Top 100 Europe. Red Herring, revista de tecnología internacional concede anualmente estos premios a las compañías tecnológicas más innovadoras y prometedoras de Europa  de acuerdo con criterios como su actividad financiera, su innovación tecnológica, su calidad de gestión, la ejecución de su estrategia y la integración en sus respectos mercados de negocio. 

Sustainable Reference es una empresa tecnológica formada por un equipo multidisciplinar que pretende desarrollar herramientas, estrategias y servicios con beneficio medioambiental, económico y social. Alex Vieux, CEO de Red Herring puso de manifiesto que “Sustainable Reference expresa la visión, motivación e innovación que define el éxito de una empresa emprendedora” y añadió que “tiene que estar orgullosa por este logro ya que la competencia fue muy dura”.

endesa1Second year students of the Bachelor in Architecture of IE University visited the headquarters of ENDESA in Madrid. ENDESA is the largest private electricity provider in Latin America. The outing was coordinated by professor Andy Bäcker of IE School of Architecture.

These type of visits help students relate the theories learnt in class to real life experiences. Professor Bäcker explained that the ENDESA building uses several cooling systems both passive and semi-passive, such as air moisturizer, natural ventilation or the usage of thermal mass to reduce temperature fluctuation. Additionally, the building has a lot of natural light and uses innovative systems like ventilation displacement. 

After Several year in operation, Bäcker explained that students also learned that some measure that architects had taken have not been successful – some having extremely costly maintenance. The students were impressed with the structuring of such a big building, with very modern facilities that enable two thousand people to work in fresh air, pleasant temperatures. The recycling system was also a highlight.

Last September, the students visited the headquarters of IDOM, currently under construction, and it is expected that they visit INTEMPER that manufactures indoor and garden walls, among other systems.

endesa2Los alumnos de segundo curso del Bachelor in Architecture de IE University realizaron una visita a la sede corporativa de Endesa en Madrid, la mayor empresa eléctrica de España y la primera compañía eléctrica privada de Iberoamérica. Esta actividad fue coordinada por el profesor Andy Bäcker, de IE School of Architecture

Con este tipo de visitas los alumnos conocen la implementación en la vida real de las lecciones teóricas que se imparten en clase. El profesor Bäcker señala que en el edificio de ENDESA se han incorporado varias estrategias de climatización pasivas/semi-pasivas, tales como humectación del aire, ventilación natural o aprovechamiento de masa térmica para reducir la fluctuación de temperatura. Además el edificio tiene mucha iluminación natural y usa unos sistemas activos realmente novedosos, como la ventilación por desplazamiento. 

Tras varios años de funcionamiento, Bäcker indica que los alumnos también aprendieron que algunas medidas implantadas en el edificio no han resultado tan exitosas, como su costoso mantenimiento.  Los estudiantes, futuros arquitectos, quedaron impresionados con las instalaciones de un edificio de considerable tamaño, que cuenta con unas instalaciones muy modernas que posibilitan a dos mil personas trabajar con aire fresco, una temperatura agradable y con  la posibilidad de reciclar los residuos que generan diariamente, entre otras comodidades. 

El pasado mes de septiembre, los alumnos realizaron una visita a la sede corporativa de IDOM, actualmente en construcción, y se preveé hacer una visita a la empresa INTEMPER , dedicada a la fabricación de cubiertas y fachadas ajardinadas, entre otros sistemas.
