IE School of Architecture & Design have sponsored the “Class of 2011” award at the Architect of the Year Awards organized, last Tuesday November 15th  by Building Design at the Brewery in London.

For the first time this year, the six chosen graduates of the Class of 2011 were invited to compete for a fully funded year-long scholarship to the IE School of Architecture & Design in Madrid, to study on a new master’s business programme geared towards starting and managing an architectural firm.

Juan Lago-Novás Domingo, Director of the School, selected Cara Shields of the University of Strathclyde, who developed a project in collaboration with fellow student Marianne Keating for the phased development of a flood-prone village in rural north-west Bangladesh.

The scheme incorporated a disaster-relief building and training centre, arranged around a series of social spaces, entirely constructed from indigenous materials. The pair have since been out to work with the local villagers to design a community centre — incorporating a school, clinic, library and a space where the community can gather, discuss and play — and are currently looking for funding to realise the project. www.stabilisingthedelta.co.uk

IE School of Architecture, patrocinador del Architect of the Year Awards, organizado por la revista Building Design

Competition Details

1. Introduction

Architecture is invading the lower level. The architecture studio is ours, and we´re about to take over “La Cueva,” the brick-vaulted lounge adjacent to the studio. We will be using that space for pinups, reviews, juries, meetings, etc. and we need a series of moveable partitions that will allow multiple groups to use this space simultaneously, while also providing resilient surfaces for pinning up material.

Your job: to design these partitions. The winning entry will be constructed by the Facilities department. Up to three honorable mentions will also be awarded. You may work individually or in teams. Good luck!

2. Program

The partition design should be economical, flexible, structurally stable, and durable, and must meet the following criteria:
A. Panels must incorporate wheels or other simple mechanism for movement.

B. Panels must comfortably allow for the display of at least four horizontal A1 sheets or two vertical A0 sheets on both two of the primary faces.

C. Panels must be able to be stored, when not in use, in or around “La Cueva” and should occupy the minimum amount of space possible when stored.
