Tessa Heimbach, a Bachelor in Psychology 2nd year student, talks about her studies and life at IE University.

Tell us a little about yourself and your background.

My name is Tessa and I am 21 years old. I live in Germany and I have a brother who is 19 years old. My mother is a consultant and my dad is a medical doctor. I went to boarding school for 5 years from which I spent my junior year in the states (also in a boarding school). I graduated from Salem International College in 2009.

When did you begin to think seriously about studying Psychology?

I always wanted to become a medical doctor and started a nursing apprenticeship after I graduated. But I quickly noticed that the hospital wasn’t the right choice for me. I had friends who were already studying Business at IE University. I visited them in Segovia for a week and I was amazed by the atmosphere, starting with my arrival in Spain, and mostly by the circle of friends and the other students who welcomed me warmly and did not treat me like a stranger – rather like someone in the group. I was positively surprised by the architecture of the IE University campus and it reminded me of the boarding schools I missed already. I heard about the chance to study Psychology with a focus in business, so I was highly interested in applying. I did not really know what to expect, but talking to advisors at my school, they highly recommended this bachelor. I was then looking into the courses, and did research about the job expectations.

What made you feel the program at IE University was a good “fit” for you?

The reason I applied to IE University was the possibility to combine Psychology with business, due to the fact that after the Bachelor, I would like to pursue a business career using the fundamentals of Psychology. At least this is the plan so far, and I am generally open to other paths as well. I really liked the idea of having small classes. As the pioneers of the program, we are only 5 which made us like an international family. The connection we have with the professors is very special, due to the fact that we can get in touch with them at any point of the week. They are willing to help with questions about a certain task or exams, but are also open to feedback and evaluations about their course.

Describe the kind of environment you find yourself in now?

In class there are 2 Spanish, 1 Moroccan, 1 French, and me. We are very different people, but that rounds the whole situation up. We have loads of fun – in class and outside of the University. The University is rather small itself, so I know most my fellow students from other Bachelor degrees and in the years above and below me which makes it very personal. For me, Segovia is a very nice city to live in. When I go out into the city, it’s normal to coincidently meet a fellow student. Walking to a friend’s apartment takes max. 10-15 minutes. Although it is not Madrid, there is also a night life in Segovia with nice pubs and small clubs where students meet up a couple of   times during the week to celebrate together.

The book Proceedings of the International Congress on Public Safety in a Diverse Society is presented by IE University in Madrid on next Tuesday, March the 6th.  The book includes the results of the International Congress which gathered at IE University almost two hundred experts from different countries and disciplines, who analyzed the interdisciplinary future of public safety.

The Congress, which took place in October of last year with the collaboration of more than thirty national and international institutions, held more than a hundred communications of specialists from fifteen countries addressing innovative practices in public safety and related fields, such as court issues, criminal research, ex-convict programs, urban planning, and public management and organization.   During four intense days, key topics on current challenges in this field were jointly analyzed, and new lines of work were drawn for a public safety in a diversity of societies throughout the world.  As a result, the book includes some International Guidelines for a Public Safety in a Diverse Society agreed in the Congress, which “may be used as a model for local, national, and international institutions and communities based on global views, reflecting the reality of a more and more interconnected world”, according to Miguel Ángel Gandarillas, professor of IE University and Congress Director.

Besides these results, the 444-pages book gathers the communication abstracts and thirty three original papers from Spain, Portugal, England, USA, Brazil, Italy, and Panama of Congress participants.  The book also includes the Congress Conclusions, resulting from a joint merging of the different debates in the twelve thematic panels, with a series of principles and proposals on the challenges of our diverse societies.

Authorities of collaborative institutions such as Madrid City Government, Regional Prosecutor, Home Affairs Ministry (through the Home Safety Studies Cabinet – GESI), and Madrid Regional Government (through the Medical-Forensic Clinic and the Agency for the Reeducation and Rehabilitation of Minor Offenders –ARRMI) will attend the book presentation.  Both the International Congress and the book are included in the “Security in Diversity” European research project, coordinated by professor Miguel Ángel Gandarillas from IE University, and funded by the European Commission.

The event will take place at 7:00 pm at IE (C/ Serrano 105, Madrid).
