Fifty pre-university students from sixteen countries participated in an activity called “IExPEERience” where IE University invited them to meet the Santa Cruz la Real campus and the city of Segovia for three days. The aim was to give the young ones a first contact with the campus and to show them the innovative model developed by IE University. 

The fifty-five students, who have already been admitted to the private school to start their studies in September 2013, came from Austria, Belgium, Colombia, United Arab Emirates, Spain, France, Italy, Jordan, Monaco, Morocco, Norway , Poland, Portugal, UK, Switzerland and Turkey. 

In addition to experiencing classes and workshops at IE University, where students from over 80 nationalities currently live, the future students had the chance to meet and share some information with some current students at the university who are studying degrees in Business Administration, Architecture, Communication, Law, Psychology and International Relations. From these new relationships, the future students will get an idea of the academic level that best adapts to their abilities and intellectual and professional concerns. Along with workshops taught by professors from IE University, those students who were admitted participated in a wide range of leisure activities such as a dance class, a silk painting workshop, a magic show or a gastronomic tour through the center of Segovia in search of the best ‘tapas’.

La experiencia de ser alumno en IE University 

Medio centenar de alumnos preuniversitarios procedentes de dieciséis países participaron en una actividad denominada “IExPEERience” con la que IE University invitaba a conocer durante tres días el campus de Santa Cruz la Real y la ciudad de Segovia. El objetivo era que los jóvenes, ya admitidos a cualquiera de los programas de grado, tomaran un primer contacto con las instalaciones e infraestructuras del campus y conocieran de primera mano el modelo innovador que desarrolla IE University. 

Los cincuenta y cinco alumnos, que ya han sido admitidos en el centro privado para iniciar sus estudios universitarios en septiembre de 2013, procedían de Austria, Bélgica, Colombia, Emiratos Árabes Unidos, España, Francia, Italia, Jordania, Mónaco, Marruecos, Noruega, Polonia, Portugal, Reino Unido, Suiza y Turquía. 

Además de experimentar clases y talleres en IE University, donde conviven actualmente estudiantes de más de ochenta nacionalidades, los jóvenes pudieron entrar en contacto y compartir información con varios alumnos de la universidad, que estudian grados como Administración de Empresas, Arquitectura, Comunicación, Derecho, Psicología y Relaciones Internacionales. De esta interrelación, los futuros estudiantes universitarios sacarán conclusiones sobre cuál es el grado académico que más se adapta a sus capacidades e inquietudes intelectuales y profesionales. 

Junto con talleres impartidos por profesores de IE University, los alumnos admitidos participaron en un amplio abanico de actividades de ocio, como una clase de baile, un taller de pintura en seda, un espectáculo de magia o una excursión gastronómica por el centro de Segovia en busca de sus mejores tapas. Los estudiantes aprovecharon su estancia en la ciudad castellana para conocer sus monumentos más significativos, como su Acueducto Romano, su Alcázar y su Catedral gótica. 

“Gracias a este evento, hemos ayudado a los futuros universitarios a afianzar su decisión de cursar el grado que han escogido; muchos de ellos nos han transmitido su satisfacción y nos han asegurado que encajan a la perfección en este modelo de universidad diversa, participativa, innovadora y global. El apoyo de los alumnos colaboradores (IE Ambassadors) ha sido fundamental”, señala Esther Díaz, Directora Adjunta de Admisiones de IE University.

The world leaders in university education gathered in Madrid today  to emphasize the need to “reinvent” higher education in order to adapt to the changes of globalization. More than ever, universities need to deploy an international strategy, and to establish partnerships between institutions in different continents that will mark the path of the future of higher education in the world. These are some of the conclusions of the second edition of the international conference “Reinventing higher education: the role of universities in a global society “, organized by IE University and the Chronicle of Higher Education. 

During the last two days, Madrid became the most important on higher education forum to bring together various thematic panels, deans, presidents of universities, thought leaders, policy makers, entrepreneurs, academics, students and media experts from all over the world in order to discuss the current state of the 21^st century university and its evolution in the coming years. 

Speakers included Lisa Anderson, president of the American University in Cairo, Salim Al Malik, CEO of International Relations, Ministry of Education of Saudi Arabia, Nigel Thrift, vice chancellor of the University of Warwick, Martha Mackenzie, president of the Students Union at the University of Oxford; Vérillaud Francis, vice president of Sciences Po, Matthew Gutmann, vice president of Brown University, and David Van Zandt, President of The New School (New York), and Santiago Iñiguez, President of IE University and Dean of IE Business School. 

The participants, who lead the most innovative educational institutions in different continents, called for greater collaboration between institutions, both in research and exchange and dissemination of knowledge. All of them agreed it is crucial to have cooperation around the world and creation of international networks and that encourage the mobility of students and teachers. The conference presented the conviction that in order to overcome the financial crisis, universities have to join forces. In a changing world, the deans do not rule out the need of mergers of universities as an important option to leverage resources and be competitive. Innovation, academic collaboration and commitment to technology are key elements the overall image of the universities. Furthermore, the deans and presidents of institutions are convinced that “we need more differentiation of our universities” to meet the expectations of a new student profile. 

The inaugural speech was given by Lisa Anderson, president of the American University in Cairo, who analyzed the role of universities in Arab revolutions. In this sense, Anderson said that we can speak of a movement that is agitated by social networks and starring young people, but it is not a revolution of students. ”The movements of May 68 were led by academics, while the Arab spring and the M 15 were directed by a multitude of actors.” 

One of the most prominent panels, composed of the presidents and leaders of Latin American institutions such as Tecnológico de Monterrey (Mexico) or the University Getulio Vargas Foundation (Brazil), analyzed the situation of Latin American universities as a destination for higher education. They indicated that the leading nations in higher education in Latin America are Brazil, Chile and Mexico, as ranked by QS (UK). Highlighting the strategic priorities of these institutions, the most important of these is the need to increase its international reputation. 

Latin American representatives discussed the international rankings, their impact on educational policies and the market, and discussed whether they really show the difference between institutions. Priority actions for the Latin American universities who want to increase their visibility are to internationalize global studies and promote entrepreneurship among students. It was stressed that regional rankings are necessary for Latin American institutions to become more globally recognized, as happened recently in China.

Las universidades necesitan “reinventarse” para adaptarse a los cambios de la globalización 

Los máximos responsables de la educación universitaria mundial constataron hoy en Madrid la necesidad de “reinventarse” para adaptar los estudios superiores a los cambios de la globalización. Hoy más que nunca, las universidades necesitan desplegar una estrategia internacional, y las alianzas entre instituciones de varios continentes marcarán la senda del futuro de la educación superior en el mundo. Estas son algunas de las conclusiones de la segunda edición de la conferencia internacional “Reinventando la educación superior: el papel de la Universidad en una sociedad global”, organizada por IE University y Chronicle of Higher Education. 

Madrid se convirtió durante los dos últimos días en el foro más importante de educación superior al reunir en varios paneles temáticos a una treintena de rectores, presidentes de universidades, líderes de opinión, responsables políticos, empresarios, académicos, representantes de estudiantes y expertos en medios de comunicación de todo el mundo con el objetivo de  debatir sobre el estado actual de la universidad del siglo XXI y su evolución en los próximos años. 

Entre los ponentes figuraron Lisa Anderson, presidente de la American University en El Cairo; Salim Al Malik, director general de Relaciones Internacionales del Ministerio de educación de Arabia Saudí; Nigel Thrift, vicerrector de la Universidad de Warwick; Martha Mackenzie, presidente de la Unión Estudiantil de Oxford; Francis Vérillaud, vicepresidente de Sciences Po; Matthew Gutmann, vicepresidente de la Universidad de Brown, y David Van Zandt, Presidente de The New School (Nueva York); y Santiago Íñiguez, Presidente de IE University y Decano de IE Business School.   

Los participantes, que lideran las instituciones más innovadoras en educación en varios continentes, abogaron por una mayor colaboración entre instituciones, tanto en investigación como en el intercambio de difusión del conocimiento. Todos coincidieron en que es vital la cooperación entre centros de todo el mundo, la creación de redes internacionales y la promoción de la movilidad de estudiantes y profesores. Otra de las ideas expuestas en la conferencia fue que la convicción de que para superar la crisis financiera las universidades tienen que unir fuerzas. En un mundo en constante cambio, los rectores no descartaron la fusión de universidades como una opción muy importante para aprovechar recursos y ser competitivos. Añadieron que la innovación, la colaboración académica y la apuesta tecnológica son elementos primordiales la imagen global de las universidades. Asimismo, los rectores y presidentes de instituciones están convencidos de que “necesitamos más diferenciación de nuestras universidades” para satisfacer las expectativas de un nuevo perfil de alumno. 

La conferencia inaugural corrió a cargo de Lisa Anderson, presidente de la American University en El Cairo, que analizó el papel de las universidades en las revoluciones árabes. En este sentido, Anderson señaló que podemos hablar de un movimiento agitado por las redes sociales y protagonizado por los jóvenes, pero no  se trata de una revolución de estudiantes. “Los movimientos de mayo del 68 fueron liderados por universitarios, mientras que los de la primavera árabe y del 15 M fueron dirigidos por multitud de actores”.

Uno de los paneles más destacados, compuesto por los rectores y líderes de instituciones latinoamericanas como el Tecnológico de Monterrey (México) o la Universidad Fundación Getulio Vargas (Brasil), analizó la situación de las universidades latinoamericanas como destino de educación superior.  En la conferencia, se indicó que los países que lideran la educación superior en Latinoamérica son Brasil, Chile y México, según el ranking de QS (UK).  Se pusieron de manifiesto las prioridades estratégicas de estas instituciones, la más importante de ellas es la necesidad de aumentar su reputación internacional. 

Los responsables latinoamericanos debatieron sobre los rankings internacionales, su impacto en las políticas educativas y en el mercado, y disertaron sobre si realmente muestran la diferencia entre las instituciones. Las acciones prioritarias para las universidades latinoamericanas que quieran incrementar su visibilidad global pasa por internacionalizar los estudios  y promover el espíritu emprendedor entre los estudiantes. Subrayaron que los ránkings regionales son necesarios para que las instituciones latinoamericanas se hagan más reconocidos globalmente, tal y como ha sucedido recientemente en China.
