IE Humanities Center in collaboration with IE Alumni Association is honored to invite you to the lecture Are Individuality and Conformity typical in Democratic Ages? Thinking With John Stuart Mill, on Wednesday 5th of May at 6 pm, with Professor Jennie Ikuta.

Jennie Ikuta is the IE-Brown International Teaching Fellow for 2014-2015 and Professor of Humanities at IE University. She received her BA from the University of Chicago (2007) and her PhD from Brown University (2014). She is currently at work on her book manuscript based on her dissertation, titled Democracy and the Quest for Human Flourishing: A Study of Mill and Nietzsche..

“Be yourself!” “Think outside of the box.” “Don’t just follow the crowd.” Such phrases pervade our culture, encouraging us to value individuality and creativity, and to resist conformity. However, recent research in social psychology has shown that in practice, we are averse to and at times, even hostile to people who ‘stick out’ from crowds, reject the status quo, and do something new. The fascination with individuality and creativity is not new, of course, and these traits were of great interest to nineteenth century thinkers such as John Stuart Mill and Friedrich Nietzsche. However, unlike today’s psychologists, they attributed the absence of individuality and creativity to modern democracy. This talk focuses on Mill’s concern, connections to Nietzsche’s thought will also be made, that democratic society corrupts individuality, how he sees conformity as a problem and individuality as an important part of the life well-lived and how he  thinks that democracy is unique as a regime type in discouraging individuality and encouraging conformity.

The event will take place at Room MMB 102, María de Molina 31 Bis, IE Business School.

Nepalese IE University students have launched the #IEforNepal campaign to raise funds to help those affected by the earthquake that hit Nepal last week

nepal“Our own immediate families are safe, but we consider every Nepalese to be our family. Right now, they need us.” This message of solidarity was sent by Nepalese IE University students Tsering Kenji, Anup Satyal, and Nischal Shrestha, who have launched the #IEforNepal campaign to raise funds to help the thousands affected by the earthquake that hit Nepal last week. IE  and IE Foundation are giving their full support to the campaign, which can accessed at https://www.gofundme.com/swzrrg, by pledging €10,000 to match donations made in this first phase by IE’s students, faculty, staff, and alumni.

Here at IE we wish to express our heartfelt solidarity with the Nepalese people at such a painful time. We have been contacting our graduates in the region and according to the information received to date they are safe. However the earthquake has claimed thousands of victims, and hundreds of thousands more are suffering the effects.  “We are extremely thankful for all the support given and concern shown by the students, alumni, faculty and everyone from the IE community during this difficult time in Nepal and India,” says Karan Gupta, IE’s Director of International Development for India and South East Asia. “When we face difficult times, we find hidden reserves of courage and resilience. We stand side by side with the people who have faced this unimaginable tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Nepal and India.”

The Minister for Industry, Energy and Tourism shared his career trajectory with IE University students in a workshop on the key factors for success in politics

Ministro Soria 1Spain’s Minister for Industry, Energy and Tourism underscored the importance of continuous learning that extends beyond university studies and throughout a person’s career. He spoke to a large group of international students at IE University’s Madrid campus in an address given in English on “How to make it to the top in politics” at the invitation of the University’s Talks Club.

“Success is not only learnt in a classroom but also through experience. That’s why IE University’s Talks Club wants to invite a range of top professionals who can share the key factors of their success, providing insights and serving as a role model for our students,” said Salvador Mompeán, a student of IE University’s Dual Degree in Business Administration and International Relations, and president of the Club.

Soria listed the key factors of political activity, talking about his career and explaining some of his responsibilities as head of one of the Spanish government’s most important ministries, dedicated to overseeing issues related to energy, industrial development, tourism, telecommunications, and the information society.

The Minister assured his audience that there is no specific age at which a person should enter politics. “I began at thirty-seven years of age, and having a good trajectory in the private sector was an excellent ally when it came to being independent in the field of politics.” Soria went on to stress that it is important to be able to see the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead, adding that in politics one person is nobody because everyone forms part of a team, and it is essential to know how to delegate and work together to attain success. The Minister also remarked that a minister does not only have the responsibility to do things well, but also to know how to communicate those things.

Ministro Soria 2“If someone is thinking about having a career in politics, they have to be very sure that it is their vocation and be willing to work twenty-four hours a day throughout the year,” Soria told the students. He also underlined the importance of failure in a career, because “we learn our biggest lessons through failure.” He recognized that an electoral defeat was the thing he learnt most from as a politician.

José Manuel Soria (born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 1958) is one of Spain’s most high-profile politicians in the current political landscape.  He holds a degree in economics and business administration, is an expert in trade and a state economist. Soria has an extensive political career. Previous positions he has held include mayor of Las Palmas, president of the City Hall of Gran Canaria, vice president and counselor of the Canary Islands government, regional deputy and national deputy, advisor to the cabinet of Spain’s Ministry of Finance, and cabinet leader of the Department of Trade.
