This year Hay Festival will feature great speakers such as  Eduardo Mendoza, Rüdiger Safranski, Lord Desai, Vicente del Bosque, Bjärke Ingels, Sharmila Tagore, Arturo Perez Reverte, David Mitchell, Janne Teller, Upamanyu Chatterjee , Iñaki Gabilondo and Juan Luis Cebrián.

The Festival of ideas and creativity will once again provoke an open and pluralistic reflection on the transformation of social and economic models, leadership, communication, the freedom of expression in the digital age, bullfighting as a cultural phenomenon, the role of women in Arab revolutions and sustainable architecture, among others.


The first part of Hay Festival will take place on Saturday 17th September at the Aula Magna of IE University – the former convent of Santa Cruz la Real. During a discussion called “Two free voices” the journalist Javier Moreno, Director of  El Pais will talk with the German philosopher and influential thinker Rudiger Safransk. This event will be hosted by the President of IE University, Santiago Iñiguez.

Hay Festival and IE University want to show the public the values of society and sport with the Spanish football team as an example of these. There will be a conversation between Oscar Campillo, Director of MARCA , David Bach, Professor of Strategy and Economic Environment at IE Business School and the Spanish National football coach Vicente del Bosque. During the talk Vicente del Bosque will share the share the secret of leadership and teamwork that made the Reds a world leader and. He will also present the audience one of his favorite readings.  “Vicente del Bosque is the Steve Jobs of football, the most innovative team leader hence the most successful in the world. There is much we can learn from him, such as sports, business and leadership in general,” says David Bach, Professor at IE Business School.

The Executive Director of the Pritzker Awards and Associate Dean of External Relations of IE School of Architecture at IE University Martha Thorne will be talking with Bjärke Ingels – one of the most recognized architects worldwide. Bjärke Ingels is the founder of Studio BIG and is considered as one of today´s most innovative architects as he has managed to combine great sustainability works. In February 2011 was published the Spanish version of “Yes Is More,” a manifesto of architectural evolution that has gained broad international acceptance.

It is also important to mention the literary journalism workshop of ABC and IE University, which will be broadcast via Internet streaming, by the Medialab of IE School of Communication. The workshop will be conducted and presented by Jesus Calero, head of Culture and ABC journalist and professor at the IE University Pedro Cifuentes and autors Eduardo Mendoza and Patricio Pron will also take part of the event. Furthermore, IE University has organized an intensive architecture that will be taught by Pablo Gil-Cornaro, professor of architectural projects in IE University. In addition to these workshops, the university will support the festival with the active involvement of several students at the Press Office of the Festival and with the participation of international students as volunteers

Rüdiger Safranski, German philosopher and writer, member of the German Language and Poetry Academy, talks with Javier Moreno, a correspondent in Berlin in 2003 and director of El Pais since 2006.Presented by Santiago Iñiguez, President of IE University. Simultaneous translation from German into Spanish will be available. The talk is co-organized by the AXA Foundation and with the collaboration of the Goethe-Institut, the German Embassy in Spain, IE University, Matarromera and El Adelantado de Segovia, Caja Segovia Municipality of Segovia, AC/E (Spanish Cultural Action), the Ministry of Culture and Renfe.

ABC – IE Workshop: Brief stories of literary journalism

Workshop produced by the Medialab of IE University and will be broadcast via streaming through
www.abc.es and open to collaboration of all by the hashtag # ABCenHay.

Writers Eduardo Mendoza  and Patricio Pron  will talk about literary journalism as a genre since the 70s of the twentieth century to the emergence of Twitter. The event will be presented by Pedro Cifuentes, Director of the Masters program in Digital Journalism at IE University and Jesús García Calero and  Inés Martín Rodrigo, from the newspaper ABC wil lalso take part. At the end of the event, participants will make a manifest of maximum of three tweets (beginning, middle and end), and the best one will receive a prize.

Vicente del Bosque, a successful football coach with international and national fame, talks with Oscar Campillo, director of MARCA, and David Bach, Strategy expert and Dean of Programs at IE Business School about the keys to success of a team as united as the Spanish. At the end of the event the speakers will share one of their favorite readings with the public.

Intensive Workshop: “Make money from architecture!”

Intensive four-hour workshop about the idea, conceptualization and realization of a project  that will turn into a lucrative business. Kiosks, hotels, zoos, theme parks, concert halls, casinos and gym clubs are examples of profitable architecture…; there are thousands of possibilities in Segovia. Participants will take a walk in Segovia looking for a suitable place, will design, construct and evenset up their business. Who knows if they will become rich architects! The workshop will be taught by Pablo Gil-Cornaro, professor of Architectural Projects in IE School of Architecture
