The Board of Governors of IE University has today appointed Salvador Carmona as the institution’s new rector, a position he will assume on September 1. Carmona will take over from Juan Luis Martínez, the outgoing rector, who has accepted a proposal to work on institutional and strategic development initiatives in the city of Cordoba, his hometown. Juan Luis Martínez will maintain close links with IE as an associate professor on extended leave.

As the new rector of IE University, Salvador Carmona’s key objectives will be to further consolidate the university’s position as a reference in the field of knowledge generation, strengthen its academic and institutional pillars as well as its international outreach, and develop the university’s role as a change agent.

“After the consolidation of an ambitious international project over the last four years, IE University has brought added impetus to the generation of top-tier academic knowledge with this appointment,” says Santiago Iñiguez, President of IE University. “Salvador Carmona’s international renown as a distinguished academic serves to further strengthen this core value of our university.”

Born in the Spanish province of Granada, Carmona holds a doctorate and university degree in economic sciences from Seville University, and is internationally recognized in academia and the field of educational management.

In the field of research, he serves as editor of the European Accounting Review, has been a member of the executive committee of the European Accounting Association, and President of the Academy of Accounting Historians. In addition to being a member of the editorial boards of fifteen prestigious international journals, he is the author and co-author of an extensive number of articles, books and teaching materials.

In the field of educational management, in addition to the positions he has held at IE he has served as the manager of Spain’s national R&D Plan, in the area of economy and business management, and has been the dean, as well as senior lecturer, of the Faculty of Social and Legal Sciences at Madrid’s Carlos III University.

Salvador Carmona also has experience in business consulting, as well as serving as visiting professor at universities that include CEIBS (China), Arizona State University (US), and University of Gothenburg (Sweden).

Salvador Carmona, who will continue to participate in international research projects, will combine his functions of rector of IE University with those of his current position as vice dean for faculty at IE Business School.
