Friday: 28-01-2011. Madrid, IE Business School. Room: F-101, María de Molina nº 2. Hour: 10.00 a.m. – 11.30 a.m.

IE School of Communication (IE University) invites you to the meeting “Scientists and Professionals in Communication”, series 2010-2011, where Vincent Doyle, Professor in Communication at IE University, will give a talk in English entitled “Diversity, Inc.: The Politics of Difference in Critical-Cultural Communication Studies and State-Managerial Discourses”.

Abstract

The keyword difference has been at the heart of some of the most productive theories for understanding the complexity and political stakes involved in the proliferation and fragmentation of identities characteristic of contemporary societies. This seminar will focus on the value of this concept for critical-cultural approaches to communication scholarship and feature illustrative examples from research on social movements and state-managerial discourses of “diversity.”

Short Bio

Vincent Doyle is Assistant Professor of Media and Cultural Studies at IE University and a Fellow of the U.S. Social Science Research Council Sexuality Research Fellowship Program. A book based on his dissertation about the media activism of the U.S.-based Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation is forthcoming from NYU Press.

Important:

The format for this session will differ from previous presentations in the Scientists and Professionals in Communication series. Instead of a talk followed by a discussion, the session is the first in a series to be conducted mainly as group discussions. The format is intended to foster greater collaboration among researchers at IE School of Communication by promoting conversations about the core assumptions, epistemologies, theories, and methodologies that inform our work.

Participants are asked to come to the seminar prepared to discuss the suggested reading(s).
